Time for part 8 in our 12-part series, “What’s on Ronnie’s Calendars?” I will be sad to be leaving Shanna the She Devil month, especially given who’s replacing her.
Yes, we already had a Spider-Man month. No, I don’t like it either. I realize Spidey is Marvel’s most popular character, but he had his own month back in February and there are plenty of other Marvel characters that deserve their own month. There’s no Avengers month, no Doctor Strange month, heck I’d rather have a Punisher month than another Spider-Man month. I’m sure Spidey already has his own calendar as well.
Anyway, if for some reason you don’t know this, the image pictured is the cover of Amazing Fantasy 15 which features the first appearance of Spider-Man. I had 15 copies of it until they burned the old homestead down. (Not really. If I really had 15 copies of Amazing Fantasy 15 I would have retired to the Caribbean by now.)
The Women of Marvel calendar replaces Shanna the She Devil with some tiresome X-Men villain. Sad. Why can’t we have two months of Shanna like we had two months of Spider-Man?
Raven Darkholme is a mutant shapeshifter who was the mother of Nightcrawler and the adoptive mother of Rogue. She was criminal scum for many years but she became popular and once that happens comics companies roll over backward to turn characters like that into heroes to better profit off them. See also “Venom: Deadly Protector.”
A naked, scaly version of the character was played by Rebecca Romijn in the X-Men movies. I’m not sure what the character’s status is right now. I was never a fan and don’t waste much time keeping up with her. There are enough X-Men to keep track of as is.
Maybe I’ll just keep Shanna up for another month.
