September is Back to School month for our ninth installment of What’s On Ronnie’s Calendars 2012.
Wolverine and the X-Men
My Marvel freebie calendar chose this month to highlight the relatively new title “Wolverine and the X-Men.” The premise of the series is that Wolverine moves back to New York (most of the X-Men are living on an island off the west coast) and reopens the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, except he’s renamed it the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters. You all know the tragic story of Jean Grey by now and if you don’t, just wait for the next segment.
I wrote glowingly about this title a few months ago (check the archives). It’s more light-hearted than your typical X-Men or Wolverine book. There’s still plenty of violence, but it’s more about the characters than the fighting. It’s in a bit of a lull now due to the “Avengers vs. X-Men” nonsense that’s consuming most Avengers/X-Men comics. Hopefully it will get back on track when that’s over.
The official Women of Marvel calendar gives September over to original X-Man Jean Grey from back in her early school days (You can tell because she’s wearing the original Xavier School uniform. And you thought your school’s dress code was bad.).
Jean enrolled in Xavier’s school, became an X-Man, fell in love with Scott Summers (Cyclops), died, was reborn as Phoenix, died again, turned out not to have died in the first place, married Cyclops, and died again. She is currently dead but that may have changed by the time you read this because I’m writing it on Thursday and this will publish on Saturday.
Wolverine, like many an X-Man, had the hots for Jean. She flatly rejected him in the early days but then Wolverine became WOLVERINE and things were retconned to make it appear that Jean secretly lusted after Logan. This is why Wolverine renamed the school after Jean when he recently reopened it.
Veil, Hazmat and Finesse
Veil (Madeline Berry), Hazmat (Jennifer Takeda) and Finesse (Jeanne Foucault) are three teenagers with super powers who have been taken in by The Avengers to be trained in how to use their powers. It’s like Xavier’s school but for non-mutants.
Veil can turn her body into a variety of gases, Hazmat is radioactive and Finesse is a polymath (whatever that means) who can duplicate a person’s abilities by watching them.
“Avengers Academy” is a pretty good book which I have also written about previously (look it up). Sadly not enough people were reading it as it has been scheduled for cancellation in the near future. No idea what will happen to the kids after that.
