“Mission: Impossible,” like “The Fast and the Furious,” is one of those rare movie franchises that actually gets better with age. “M:I” reached new heights with its last installment, “Ghost Protocol,” and its latest, “Rogue Nation,” is equally as good.
The movie opens with the eye-popping scene you’ve seen in every commercial (and movie poster) promoting this film, as special agent Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) hangs on for dear life while a plane he’s trying to stop takes off. And that’s just the first of several amazing action sequences.
Back in the states, CIA chief Alan Hunley (Alec Baldwin) gets permission to shut down the Impossible Mission Force, which he sees as reckless and dangerous. Meanwhile, Hunt is convinced a secret organization known as The Syndicate is up to no good and is determined to expose it and shut it down. He can’t do that by going back to D.C. and being Hunley’s lapdog, so Hunt goes underground.
He’s eventually joined by the rest of the IMF team — William Brandt (Jeremy Renner), Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) — as well as a mysterious British agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) whose loyalty is always under suspicion. Is she a double agent? A triple agent? More like quadruple before it’s all over.
Their adversary this time is slimy Syndicate head Solomon Lane (Sean Harris), who always manages to be one step ahead of Hunt. aaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnddd yadda yadda yadda.
Look, I’m 24 hours away from vacation and my mind is already in Snowbird, Utah. So let’s wrap this up.
Movie: very good. Tom Cruise: very talented. Rest of cast: Also talented. Action sequences: Amazing. Story: Familiar. If you’ve enjoyed the “M:I” movies so far, you should enjoy this one.
